With the Easter break fast approaching it may be helpful to have some travel tips to help to maintain your sanity! The most important thing when travelling with young children is to avoid “stretching” them. A child will often cope on the first day with a long travel day and then repay you the next day with crying and grizzly behaviour the next. You can avoid this by planning and sticking to short legs.
Tips on the road
- Plan car trips in short bursts
- Drive no longer than four hours a day then: STOP!!
- When your child is due for a feed: STOP!!
- When it is sleeping time move back into the car and: GO!!
- Be settled into your accommodation by no later than 3.00pm.
- PLAY AND REST!!
- Take Australian Bush Flower Travel Essence for both adults & children
- Have changes of clothes accessible
Keep them occupied
- CDs, DVDs & Books (libraries are good for this)
- Small bright toys
- Play Games
- Sing songs including those with actions or noises – If you’re happy and you know it, Wheels on the bus & Old MacDonald
- I Pod in car with playschool music, nursery rhymes, stories and songs.
- Felt stories/magnetic stories & sticker books
- On a plane take a laptop & put on a slideshow of family photos, or a DVD (take headphones)
And on a lighter note….
This story shows we are all human. A Mum in one of my workshops shared her travel experience:- . On a long car trip her three children were arguing and fighting constantly. In desperation she held up a bag of sweets and said “These are for our trip; every time you argue I will throw one out the window”! Needless to say there were very few fights after she threw the first one out the window!
Have a wonderful holiday and safe and happy travelling and please share your travel tips and funny moments.
